چکیده

Micro hotlm shear-stress sensors have been developed by using surface micromachining techniques. The sensor consists of a suspended silicon-nitride diaphragm located on top of a vacuum-sealed cavity. A heating and heat-sensing element, made of poly-crystalline silicon material, resides on top of the diaphragm. The underlying vacuum cavity greatly reduces conductive heat loss to the substrate and therefore increases the sensitivity of the sensor. Testing of the sensor has been conducted in a wind-tunnel under three operation modes constant current, constant voltage, and constant temperature. Under the constanttemperature mode, a typical shear stress sensor exhibits a time constant of 72 s.

Design and fabrication of artificial lateral line flow sensors

Underwater flow sensing is important for many robotics and military applications, including underwater robots and vessels. We report the development of micromachined, distributed flow sensors based on a biological inspiration, the fish lateral line sensors. Design and fabrication processes for realizing individual lateral line sensor nodes are discussed in this paper, along with preliminary cha...

Two-Dimensional Micromachined Flow Sensor Array for Fluid Mechanics Studies

We discuss two types of micromachined flow sensors realized by using novel microfabrication processes—a hot-wire anemometer ~based on thermal transfer! and a biologically inspired flow sensor ~based on momentum transfer!. Both sensors are enabled by a new, efficient three-dimensional assembly technique called the plastic deformation magnetic assembly method. The sensors can be packaged in high-...

Surface Micromachined Thermal Shear Stress Sensor

We have designed, fabricated, and tested a new type of thermal shear-stress sensor. The sensor consists of a 2 m wide polysilicon thermistor (with a range of lengths, 80-200 m) on a 1.2 m thick silicon-nitride diaphragm, which is on top of a vacuum cavity 200 200 2 m in size. The vacuum cavity provides a good thermal isolation between the resistive element and the substrate; shear-stress sensit...

Slip flow of an optically thin radiating non-Gray couple stress fluid past a stretching sheet

This paper addresses the combined effects of couple stresses, thermal radiation, viscous dissipation and slip condition on a free convective flow of a couple stress fluid induced by a vertical stretching sheet. The Cogley- Vincenti-Gilles equilibrium model is employed to include the effects of thermal radiation in the study. The governing boundary layer equations are transformed into a system o...

Micromachined Fluid Inertial Sensors

Micromachined fluid inertial sensors are an important class of inertial sensors, which mainly includes thermal accelerometers and fluid gyroscopes, which have now been developed since the end of the last century for about 20 years. Compared with conventional silicon or quartz inertial sensors, the fluid inertial sensors use a fluid instead of a solid proof mass as the moving and sensitive eleme...
